Right, so while we wait for some peel and stick wallpaper to arrive for my office closet project, let’s do something fun. A 5 minute decor craft project, scrap wood doggie faces. Fun! Joy! Yay!
Gah, precious, right?!?!
It’s no secret, I am a dog fan. A dog person. Through and through, dogs dogs dogs. Spot my car and you’ll find a Tell Your Dog I Said Hi sticker.
We all know dogs are special, little angels on earth that us humans are beyond lucky to share time with. Their unconditional love, the way they give, always there for you with their sweet eyes…. Sigh.
My dad died, friends.
On top of having a rough go, the going has gotten rougher. I’ve mentioned him here on the blog for his impressive mastery of all things structural. How he thought I should have my own show, heh.
His kindness, his generosity, his quiet calm, his unwavering care, thoughtfulness, strength…I could list and list his extraordinary qualities as a person, as my dad, until I’m blue in the face.
Instead, I am blue. I hope I can be half as great as he was. I’m lucky that he was mine. I will miss him to eternity.
Ok.
Yeah. Everything is hard.
Goodness knows how long ago, I stumbled across these freaking adorable pup faces on Etsy.* Bookmarked for later, as one does.
I had to make them. Had to.
Now, I’m not trying to take money out of this person’s pocket or rip this idea off. Absolutely buy them* if crafting isn’t in the cards.
I’m just here to show you how you can not only have some monster fun but get you to think outside the box, look at materials not just for what they are but what they can be.
Imagination! You’ve got one, I know it, yes, you do, really, for real, and I want you to use it, be happy.
So today’s the day. I got a fire in my shorts and it was game on.
Now, don’t panic, oodles of fancy tools are not needed for this. While I did use my miter saw and band saw, neither is critical. You can use a hand saw* or just a hammer* to bust pieces apart.
And truly, I sh*t you not, one of these cutie patooties will take you all of mere moments to assemble.
You won’t be able to stop. They’re too delightful, not only to gaze upon but the process too.
The best part about making these scrap wood doggie faces is they are entirely customizable — use whatever the heck you want and have on hand.
Or heck, make cat faces, bunny faces, turtles, bears, ya know, if you want. I happen to be dog-partial.
This 5 minute decor craft was free to me as everything on my supply list, I had on hand. And for the most part, you might likely too.
For the wood, I used pallet wood pieces I had lying around, stuff I scrounged for my Antisigns.
Ok, so I had sent these out to the firewood pile so I needed to retrieve them, first things first.
The great thing about these pallet wood pieces, for me, was their condition: worn, pitted, cracked, inconsistent, chipped, and well-aged. In other words: ready.
If you don't have scrap pallet wood pieces or can't find them, any scrap wood, or any wood will do. You do you, boo.
And look, as a DIY’er, or really just as a homeowner, ok, as a human, lots of bits and pieces of random hardware pile up. And I’ve got those pesky packets tendencies; I stash them all.
Because you just never know. And that's happened to me twice recently. Needed it and it was no longer here. Heh.
Anyway, this little doggie face decor project is a perfect way to use up not only some scrap wood but also random nuts, washers, plastic thingamabobs, whatever is collecting dust in that one corner no one acknowledges.
All right so here’s my supply list and, note, yours may vary:
- scrap pallet wood pieces
- washers, nuts, wing nut, plastic bumpers, random hardware bits
- leather strap*
- wood balls*
- Glossy Wood Tone spray paint*
- black and white spray paint*
- wood glue*
- Loctite Crystal Clear Extreme glue*
- hot glue*
- picture hanging hardware*
Honestly, truly, whatever you have. Tile pieces, paper, cardboard, string, rope, felt, sandpaper…any-the-heck-thing.
Mmk, collect your craft supplies and let’s make this 5 minute decor craft: scrap wood doggie faces.
Start by grabbing one of the wood pieces and feel if a face jumps out at you. I know, a little dippy sounding.
If you don’t see it, no worries, just start placing bits and pieces on there, moving, arranging, things for noses, ears, eyes.
Once you’ve got an idea taking shape, flip the wood over and attach the picture hanging hardware you plan to use. I skipped the hassle of the itty nails and used the Loctite glue to stick them on. Hot glue works too.
Flip the board back over and lay everything out again, see if you need to spray paint anything, knock some sheen off, ya know, whatever.
Glossy Wood Tone, in my theater prop master days, was as essential as breathing. It “aged” anything spray paint stuck to, knocked shine off mirrors and glass, and solved nearly everything under the sun. Seems it’s harder to come by these days so I’d suggest a brown spray paint and be extra judicious for a similar effect.
Chop up some wood for ears or a nose or teeth.
Screw the leather strap on an edge for a floppy ear.
Snip string or twine for whiskers if you'd like though I went minimal with mine.
Hot tip? Save every last little scrap, cut off, and bit as you might use it on a different face. I kept throwing stuff out then having to dig through the trash bin.
Then really, all you do is glue the parts on.
And just keep going. And I did. I could not stop myself, the possibilities were literally endless. It was entertaining and as odd as it may sound, it felt satisfying using up random hardware and scrap wood for something so dang freakin' cute.
Lastly, hang your new doggie face decor up on the wall.

So what did Mike think when he saw these sweetie scrap wood doggie faces? Ya know, right there next to his television, something new in a spot where nothing has been in a long time?
He didn’t even see them. bvvvvt, oblivious, didn’t notice at all. Sigh, well, he’ll read this, be agog, and will let me know when he gets home from work.
Rather buy one than make one? No problem! Come visit my shop! Or, if you're in town, go buy them at Hey, I Thought of You!
